Philosophy of Education

I believe first and foremost that children learn through play. Children thrive in warm, supportive, and responsive environments where adults create open ended activities and questions that support children’s cognitive development. Children construct knowledge from first hand experiences. Children will explore their environments, problem solve, and develop understanding of their world. New knowledge is learned by strategically placing it among older knowledge. They incorporate this new information to fit into their past experiences. This allows children to make sense of their physical and social world. As a teacher, I observe children for opportunities to extend children’s growth and learning. This is the best way to facilitate learning. Children need scaffolding to challenge their abilities, yet adhere to developmentally appropriate practices so that the child is not frustrated. As a new teacher, I realize the importance of how the child learns. Teaching is a partnership between the teacher, the student, the parents, professionals, and the community. Open communication is the medium in which all parties must participate in to succeed in education and learning. Each person is an active contributor of the same goals. I will facilitate best learning and developmental outcomes for children by using a problem solving philosophy. This includes using active listening, negotiation, providing limits, modifying the environment, and giving affirmations.
